Abstract
The decay of cultural mosaic like historical settings, which reflect the sentiments, thoughts, tendencies and experiences of the times during which they were made, negatively affect the atmosphere of historical cities. Researching, studying, documenting and transferring to the future generations the values carried by these settings, which make up a bridge between the past and the future, is of vital importance for the survival of cities. The analysis of the Three Kümbet and of their environs, which carry in them the historical and traditional urban elements of the ancient city of Erzurum, and which include in great number, religious buildings, traditional residences and streets, fountains etc. and in other words which represent the historical nature of the city, has been done with these aims in mind. The analysis is made up of an introduction, a presentation of the subject area, a study of the buildings in the area, an analysis of the types of traditional streets and residential buildings, and a conclusion. The streets, street types and the characteristics that influence the perception have been analysed and evaluated on the basis of measured drawings and of other studies done in situ. The residential buildings on the other hand, have been analysed and evaluated on the basis of their plans and of the elements and characteristics making up their façades.
