Elimizdeki eser 11-13 Ocak 1991 günleri arasında Girit Adası'nın Rethymnon (Resmo) şehrinde toplanmış olan sempozyumdaki konuşmaları yayımlayan E.A. Zachariadou'nun bir önsözü (IX-X) ile başlamaktadır. Yazar, bu kitapta, Bizans'ın güneydoğu sınıflarında ortaya çıkan küçük Osmanlı Beyliği'nin, Bizans'ı bertaraf ettikten sonra kudretli bir imparatorluk haline gelmesi ile Hıristiyan dünyasında yüzyıllarca etkili olmasını çeşitli bakımlardan ele alan değişik yazarlara ait görüşleri, ayrı ayrı makaleler halinde bilim dünyasına sunmaktadır.
